We are 7 days away, until the 2022 NFL Draft kicks off. 7 days, that’s it. Here’s my latest forecast, of how I see things playing out next week. I hope you enjoy!
*indicates compensatory selection
1. Jacksonville = Aidan Hutchinson (Sr) EDGE – Michigan
- The Jags resigned Left Tackle Cam Robinson (I wasn’t fond of the move), and signed former Washington Guard Brandon Scherff. With those 2 signings, I think their gonna focus their attention to the defensive side of the ball, in particular edge rusher. Hutchinson would fit in nicely at DE in their 3-4 scheme. Hutchinson’s decision to return for his Senior year paid off handomsely, as he transformed from a mid to late first round pick, to now the top pick. What a difference a year makes.
2. Detroit = Kayvon Thibodeaux (Jr) EDGE – Oregon
- Thibodeaux (my top player in the Draft) has been dinged this whole process, because of a lack of effort. Let’s not overthink things here. He was a lethal pass rusher in Eugene, and would give the Lions a much-needed boost at pass rush. Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell select back-to-back Ducks in the first round, reuniting Thibodeaux with Penei Sewell. He should be a star in no time.
3. Houston = Ikem Ekwonu (Jr) OT/G – North Carolina State
- The Texans can go in a lot of different directions. Trading down accumulating more picks might be the best option to be fair, preparing them for the future. If they stay put, they can select the former Wolfpack stud. Laremy Tunsil’s future is up in the air, and even if he ends up staying in Houston, they can use someone opposite him. With a little refinement as a pass protector, there’s All-Pro potential.
4. New York Jets = Evan Neal (Jr) OT – Alabama
- If the Jets don’t significantly approve, I don’t know if Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas, will be retained in 2023. This selection will help them keep their jobs. Zach Wilson can be better protected up front, and Neal would start from day 1 at Right Tackle. If Mekhi Becton struggles, Neal can be moved over to the left side. Neal is the best Tackle in this Class, and would help keep Wilson upright.
5. New York Giants = Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner (Jr) CB – Cincinnati
- Taking a WR here, is a little bit of a reach. The Giants can use some help in the Secondary. James Bradberry had a down year, after earing a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2020. Adoree’ Jackson can be upgraded, so taking Gardner here makes total sense. Sauce never allowed a Touchdown during his time in Cincinnati, which is remarkable. He’s a true shut-down Corner, and figures to make his share of Pro Bowls.
6. Carolina = Kenny Pickett (RsSr) QB – Pittsburgh
- From what it sounds like, the Panthers don’t view Sam Darnold as “the guy”. They tried to trade for Deshaun Watson, which speaks volumes. Pickett initally committed to Temple, when Matt Rhule was the Head Coach their, before flipping his commitment to Pittsburgh. I feel that’s the deciding factor here. Malik Willis will probably need time, before he gets on the field, and Matt Rhule can’t afford to wait. He will probably be gone, if the Panthers don’t improve. Pickett will help Rhule save his job. Pickett becomes the new face of the franchise in Carolina.
7. New York Giants (from Chicago) = Charles Cross (RsSo) OT – Mississippi State
- This is a make-or-break year for Daniel Jones. He needs to be better protected, to give him a better chance of succeeding. Cross is arguably the best pass protector in this Draft, but does need work as a run blocker, with him playing in Mike Leach’s Air Raid Offense. Cross would start immediately at Right Tackle, and would help keep Jones upright.
8. Atlanta = Garrett Wilson (Jr) WR – Ohio State
- Atlanta could go Malik Willis here, but with Arthur Smith having a good relationship with Marcus Mariota dating back to their days in Tennesee, I see them passing on one here. However, they could take one later in the Draft. Even before Calvin Ridley’s suspension, the Falcons needed WR help, and Wilson would provide immediate help. Wilson has the traits to be a dominant WR in this league.
9. Seattle (from Denver) = Travon Walker (Jr) DL – Georgia
- As we speak, I think Seattle is the favourite to land Baker Mayfield, which is why I didn’t give them Malik Willis here. Seattle is thrilled that Walker slid right into their lap. They need help along the Defensive Line, and Walker would make an immediate impact. I’m not sure if he’s a true Edge guy, with his stiffness trying to bend the Edge. If not, slide him inside, where he can create havoc, game in and game out.
10. New York Jets (from Seattle) = Jameson Williams (Jr) WR – Alabama
- Williams has been ahead of schedule in his rehab, from recovering from a torn ACL suffered in the National Championship Game. There’s been rumours of him being the first WR taken, but I can’t see it happening. 2nd year QB Zach Wilson could be poised for a breakout Sophomore year, if he’s throwing to a guy like Jameson Williams. If he was healthy, he might have broken John Ross’ 4.22 40 yard dash record. He just might be the fastest player in this Draft.
11. Washington = Kyle Hamilton (Jr) S – Notre Dame
- I think everyone knows why Kyle Hamilton is sliding. Don’t worry about the time, he plays faster on tape. If he was eligible for last year’s Draft, he would have been the first Safety off the board, and would have been a 1st Round pick. Washington is thrilled that Hamilton slides to them, and makes him the new leader of the Defense. This is a really nice fit.
12. Minnesota = Derek Stingley Jr. (Jr) CB – LSU
- Minnesota did resign Patrick Peterson, but they need to start thinking of the future. Stingley’s old DC Daronte Jones, is now the DB’s Coach in Minnesota, and that makes Stingley the selection. Did teams stay away from him after that remarkable True Freshman year? Did injuries play a factor in his play declining? Did Stingley just play out the clock until he was Draft eligible? These are all factors team will need to figure out. If he plays like he did in 2019, you just might be getting the best player in this years Draft.
13. Houston (from Cleveland) = Chris Olave (Sr) WR – Ohio State
- If Houston wants Davis Mills to vastly improve this year, he needs more weapons around him. Olave helped his Draft stock, by returning for his Senior year. He’s my WR1, and has been since the start of the College Season, and his game translates well to the next level. He’s as smooth as they come in this Draft, and would give Davis Mills a true #1 WR.
14. Baltimore = Andrew Booth Jr. (Jr) CB – Clemson
- Marlon Humphrey and Marcus Peters both suffered season injuries last year and more help is needed in the Secondary. Booth can work in the Slot, and then take over on the outside, if Marcus Peters isn’t retained in 2023.
15. Philadelphia (from Miami) = Drake London (Jr) WR – USC
- I wouldn’t call Jalen Reagor a bust just yet. He can’t be relied on, and that prompts the Eagles to spend another first round pick on a WR. London is a jump ball specialist, who would pair with DeVonta Smith, to form one of the best young WR duos in the league.
16. New Orleans (from Philadelphia) = Treylon Burks (Jr) WR – Arkansas
- The Saints moved up, because they fell their a few pieces away, from taking the next step. They just signed Jameis Winston to a 2 year deal, but Malik Willis isn’t out of the question here. But I see them going WR, a very talented one in Burks. Burks still has some work to do, in terms of route running, but he should be able to contribute right away. If he tweaks his game, he might end up being the best WR from this class.
17. Los Angeles Chargers = Trevor Penning (RsSr) OT – Northern Iowa
- This was a tough one. The Chargers could go Jordan Davis, or even another WR here, but better protecting Justin Herbert trumps all. Penning would step in and start right away at RT, helping keep Herbert upright. Justin Herbert is somewhere smiling.
18. Philadelphia (from New Orleans) = Trent McDuffie (Jr) CB – Washington
- It’s crucial that the Eagles hit on both their first round picks this year. The team has talent, just not enough yet to make a run. This pick will help that. McDuffie has been dinged this whole process due to his size, but he plays much bigger, and would give that Secondary a much-needed boost. I really like this fit.
19. New Orleans (from Philadelphia) = Bernhard Raimann (Sr) OT – Central Michigan
- Malik Willis would be cool here, but they have other needs, including Tackle. Terron Armstead is out the door, and Raimann can step in and start right away for him. He’s a bit of an overaged prospect turning 25 in September, but he has the traits to be a solid starting Tackle in this league.
20. Pittsburgh = Malik Willis (RsSr) QB – Liberty
- Alas! Malik Willis is finally off the board! I really think the Steelers don’t invision a Quarterback falling this far, but if one falls to them, I think they will be obligated to pull the trigger and take one. He would compete for the starting job right away, but there’s a good chance he needs to sit, before getting on the field. If he cleans up his mechanics, he might end up being the best Quarterback from this Class. He’s simply, a boom or bust prospect.
21. New England = Devin Lloyd (RsSr) LB – Utah
- I wanted to give the Patriots a WR here, but they generally don’t take WR’s this high. Especially with N’Keal Harry struggling, I think they will shy away, from taking a WR in the 1st. LB’s Ja’Whaun Bentley and Dont’a Hightower are getting up their, and their game has declined. Bill Bilichick is going to have fun, using the versatile Lloyd on his Defense.
22. Green Bay (from Las Vegas) = Jahan Dotson (Sr) WR – Penn State
- I think everyone on the planet, knows why I gave the Packers a WR here. Green Bay hasn’t drafted a WR in the 1st Round since they took Javon Walker in 2002. That streak is finally broken. Dotson is as sure-handed as it gets in this Draft, and would instantly be the teams new #1 WR. Aaron Rodgers is gonna love throwing to the former Penn State star.
23. Arizona = Jermaine Johnson (RsSr) EDGE – Florida State
- This Cardinals is almost their, as evidenced last season. I think their biggest need is WR, but the top ones are all gone, and taking one here is a bit of a reach. So they focus their attention to the Defensive side of the ball, in particular Edge rusher. Chandler Jones is gone, and Johnson can start right away in his place. Johnson enjoyed a breakout season after transferring from Georgia, collecting 70 total tackles, and 12 sacks.
24. Dallas = Kenyon Green (Jr) OG/OT – Texas A&M
- The Cowboys can go in a variety of different areas here. I wouldn’t rule out a WR here, but I think they will add one on Day 2. Guard is their biggest need, and Green may be the best Guard in this Draft. Green would start right away, replacing the departed Connor Williams, and help clear paths for Ezekiel Elliott. He might be able to move to Left Tackle, once Tyron Smith hangs it up.
25. Buffalo = Kaiir Elam (Jr) CB – Florida
- Levi Wallace is gone, and Tre’Davious White, is coming off a torn ACL, so more help is needed. Elam is kinda getting lost in the CB shuffle this year, but don’t ignore him. He has good bloodlines, and has a very high ceiling. He and Tre White, would form a nice CB tandem.
26. Tennessee = Tyler Smith (RsSo) OT/G – Tulsa
- Rodger Saffold was released and signed with Buffalo, and David Quessenberry has yet to be signed. Here’s some insurance. Smith can start at Right Tackle, and if he struggles their, he can be slide inside. I really like this fit.
27. Tampa Bay = Tyler Linderbaum (RsJr) IOL – Iowa
- Ali Marpet shockingly retired this offseason, and Alex Cappa signed with Cincinnati. Linderbaum started off his College career as a Defensive Lineman, before moving to the other side of the ball the following year, as a RS Freshman. He’s the best Centre prospect in this Draft by far, but has the versatility to play Guard. I see him starting off at Guard, and then once Ryan Jensen retires, he will move to Centre.
28. Green Bay = George Karlaftis (Jr) EDGE – Purdue
- The Packers filled their biggest need earlier with the selection of Dotson, and now they fill their second biggest need here. Za’Darius Smith is gone, and Preston Smith is showing signs of decline.
29. Kansas City (from Miami) = Christian Watson (RsSr) WR – North Dakota State
- Again, I think everyone on the planet, knows why I gave the Chiefs a WR here. They could wait until Day 2 to snag one, but I feel it’s better for them to take one now. Watson has been skyrocketing up Draft boards this whole process, and there’s been buzz of him going in the opening frame. He has really nice traits, but he’s still fairly raw, needing polish. With some polish, he could be really dangerous in this league.
30. Kansas City = Jordan Davis (Sr) DT – Georgia
- Your probably thinking to yourself “No way Jordan Davis falls this far”. Well he did so. The Chiefs have other needs to address like Corner, and Linebacker, but Davis is too good to pass up at this point in the Draft. He will pair with Chris Jones, to form perhaps the best Interior D Line in the NFL. Offensive Coordinators will have a very tough time game planning against them.
31. Cincinnati = Roger McCreary (Sr) CB – Auburn
- The Bengals did a great job in free agency helping fix the Offensive Line, but I still wouldn’t rule out them taking one here. Eli Apple was resigned, but only to a 1 year deal. More help is needed at Corner anyway. McCreary is another one, that has been lost in the CB shuffle the past couple of months, but he’s a solid prospect in his own right. McCreary lacks ideal length for a Corner. Whether outside or inside, he should become a solid pro.
32. Detroit (from Los Angeles Rams) = David Ojabo (RsSo) EDGE – Michigan
- It’s unfortunate David Ojabo tore his Achilles at his Pro Day. Guaranteed, guys will now not participate in their Pro Day, after seeing what happened to Ojabo. They could pick a Quarterback here, but with them picking again 2 picks later, they can take one their. Ojabo will slide, but I don’t see him falling out of the opening frame. Ojabo will give that Lions Defense much-needed pass rush help immediately.
33. Jacksonville = Zion Johnson (Sr) OL – Boston College
34. Detroit = Matt Corral (RsJr) QB – Ole Miss
